I love these shoes! Comfotable right out of the box with the snug fit of a grest spike. They are aggressive and really help propel me down the track.  Plus, they look fantastic!

Youth Track & Field Running Shoes

There is a lot to consider other than just grabbing the smallest pair you can find. I've watched too many parents waste money on youth track spikes their 8 year old wore twice before quitting, or worse, kids getting injured because they weren't ready for the aggressive design of proper spikes.

When Are Kids Actually Ready for Track Spikes?

Here's the truth most stores won't tell you: kids under 10 probably don't need spikes. Youth track shoes with spikes require a specific running form that most younger children haven't developed yet. Around age 11 or 12 is when kids can safely transition from regular trainers to their first pair of track spikes for kids.

Why this age? Its simple younger kids still heel strike when they run. Sprint track spikes have basically zero heel cushioning, which means your 9 year old will be pounding their heels into the track with no protection. Their muscles and tendons are still developing; the aggressive angles that spikes force can lead to injuries that'll sideline them for months.

Choosing the Right Type of Youth Track Spikes

If your child's just starting out, skip the specialized mid distance spikes or long jump spikes they need something versatile that works for multiple events.

Multi event spikes such as the Volt Spikes are your best bet for beginners. They've got enough heel cushioning to protect developing feet but still provide that spike advantage on the track. These all rounders work for everything from 400m races to basic jumping events, perfect while your kid figures out what events they actually like. Once they specialize? Then you can look at event specific options.

The Sizing Nightmare Nobody Talks About

Kids track shoes with spikes typically run half to full size smaller than regular shoes. Add the conversion confusion, and you've got parents ordering three different sizes just to find one that fits. Pro tip: trace your kid's foot on paper and measure it in centimeters, then use the manufacturer's size chart. Way more accurate than guessing based on their sneaker size.

Training vs. Competition

Even when your young athlete gets their shiny new spikes, they shouldn't live in them. Warmups? Training shoes. Cool down jog? Training shoes. Random Tuesday practice? You guessed it, training shoes. Youth track spikes should only come out for specific speed work and competitions.

I see kids wearing their spikes for entire practices and wondering why they've got shin splints by week three. These shoes are specialized tools, not everyday footwear. Plus, wearing them sparingly makes them last longer, important when kids' feet grow faster than an adult.

Making Your Investment Last

Kids are rough on gear, but proper care can stretch those spikes through at least one full season (assuming their feet don't change two sizes). Track guard spike covers are essential. one walk across the parking lot without them can dull the pins significantly.

Kids Track Spikes FAQs

What age should kids start wearing track spikes?

Most kids can safely start around age 11-12 but only when they've developed proper running form. Younger athletes should use regular training shoes to avoid injuries from the aggressive spike design.

Do youth track spikes really make kids faster?

Yes, spikes provide better traction and encourage forefoot striking. However they won't magically fix poor running technique, and can actually cause injuries if worn too young.

What's the difference between youth and adult track spikes?

Often just the sizing label! Many "youth" spikes are actually adult sizes that run small. True youth specific models sometimes have extra heel cushioning for developing feet.

Should kids wear spikes for practice?

Only for specific speed work or technique sessions. Most practice should be in regular trainers to avoid overuse injuries and preserve the spikes for competitions.

How should kids track spikes fit?

Snug but not painful, usually 0.5-1 size smaller than regular shoes. There should be minimal movement inside but toes shouldn't be cramped. Remember they run small already!

Can kids use the same spikes for all events?

Beginners can use multi event spikes for most events. Once they specialize, event specific shoes make a difference, but versatile spikes work fine for young athletes trying different events.

How long do kids track spikes last?

With proper care, one season usually. But kids' feet grow fast and they often outgrow them before wearing them out.
