Best High Jump Spikes
Clearing the bar isn’t just about strength or technique it’s also about traction, stability, and the confidence that your shoes won’t let you down. High jump spikes are built specifically for vertical jumping, with a design unlike any other track shoe. From the curved approach to the explosive takeoff, the right pair helps you squeeze out every extra centimetre.
What Makes High Jump Spikes Unique?
What makes high jump track spikes immediately recognizable is their dual spike configuration. Unlike sprint track spikes that only feature forefoot pins, high jump shoes incorporate spikes in both the heel and forefoot typically 11 total. The Hyper Sunset High Jump Spikes feature this specialized design, providing essential traction during your curved approach and preventing dangerous slippage at the critical takeoff moment.
This heel spike placement serves a crucial purpose. As you lean into your approach curve and plant your takeoff foot, the heel spikes grip the track surface, allowing you to convert horizontal speed into vertical power without losing energy to slippage. The forefoot spikes maintain traction through the acceleration phase, while the heel pins ensure stability during the plant a combination that's essential for modern high jump techniques.
Engineered for Maximum Vertical Power
Modern high jump shoes use plates made from Pebax, nylon or sometimes carbon. The goal is balance stiff enough for explosive takeoff, but flexible enough for a smooth, natural approach.
Most models also include a midfoot strap, and it’s not just for show. That strap locks your foot in place, so you don’t lose energy from your foot shifting inside the shoe. Considering the forces you’re putting through one leg at takeoff, often over 1,600 pounds a secure lockdown is as much about injury prevention as it is about performance.
Getting the right fit
Fit is critical with high jump spikes. They should feel snug, almost like an extension of your foot, and usually run about half to a full size smaller than your trainers. The strap should hold you in firmly without cutting off circulation, and your toes should come close to the front when standing.
It’s also worth stressing that high jump spikes are event-specific. Long jump or pole vault spikes might look similar, but they don’t have heel spikes, and they won’t give you the traction you need on the plant. If you’re a multi-event athlete, you’ll need separate shoes for each discipline.
Taking Care of your Spikes
Take care of your spikes well and they’ll last longer. Always carry them in a spike bag, and use spike covers when walking on concrete so you don’t blunt the pins. Check them regularly and replace worn pins before they cost you grip.
High Jump Spikes FAQs
What makes high jump spikes different from other track spikes?
They’re the only ones with both heel and forefoot pins, usually 11 total. That dual setup gives grip on the curve and security on the plant.
Can I use regular sprint spikes for high jumping?
Not really. Sprint spikes don’t have heel pins, so you risk slipping at takeoff. They’re fine for beginners, but you’ll quickly need proper high jump shoes.
How should high jump shoes fit?
Snug and secure. About half to a full size smaller than trainers, with the strap locking your foot down. Your toes should nearly touch the front.
Are high jump spikes suitable for other jumping events?
No, high jump spikes are event specific. The heel spikes that provide essential grip for high jumping would actually interfere with performance in long jump, triple jump, or pole vault events.
How many pins should high jump spikes have?
Usually 11, around 6–7 in the forefoot and 4 in the heel, which is the maximum allowed by World Athletics.
What's the best material for high jump spike plates?
High jumping shoes have evolved over time, most quality high jump spikes use carbon plates plates that balance stiffness for explosive takeoff with flexibility for the approach run.
How long do high jump spikes typically last?
Typically 1–2 seasons, since they don’t rack up as much mileage as sprint spikes.
Should I practice in my competition high jump spikes?
Save them mainly for meets and key sessions. Do most approach work in trainers or older spikes to keep your competition pair fresh.
