Field Event Spikes & Shoes for Jump & Throw Events

When centimetres separate champions from the rest of the field, having the right footwear for your field event becomes crucial. Whether you're launching yourself over the high jump bar, tearing down the long jump runway, or spinning in the shot put circle, specialized field event shoes provide the technical advantages needed to achieve your next PR.

High Jump Spikes

The best high jump spikes for competition feature a unique design that sets them apart from all other track footwear. Unlike traditional running spikes, high jump shoes incorporate pins in both the forefoot and heel typically 11 total providing maximum traction during the curved approach and crucial grip at takeoff. The Hyper Sunset High Jump Spikes feature a reinforced heel and midfoot strap for ultimate stability during your approach arc.

Modern high jump spikes often feature a Pebax or carbon fiber plate that balances stiffness for explosive takeoff with enough flexibility for a natural approach run. The additional heel spikes prove essential when planting your takeoff foot, preventing slippage that could cause injury. If you’re serious about high jump, dedicated spikes are a must. Sprint spikes just don’t give you the grip or safety you need on takeoff.

Long Jump and Triple Jump Spikes

Long jump spikes are all about blending sprint speed with takeoff power. They use aggressive plates like sprint spikes but add a bit more support through the midfoot and just enough cushioning to handle the landings.

Triple jump spikes take it up a notch, with extra heel cushioning to survive the hop step jump sequence. They’re built tougher, with reinforced midsoles and sometimes carbon plates to help you keep energy through all three phases.

The Hypermax Spikes are a versatile option many athletes use for both long and triple jump perfect if you compete in multiple events.

Pole Vault Spikes

Pole vault demands footwear that combines the speed generation of sprint spikes with the stability needed for planting and takeoff. The Hyper Leap Pole Vault Spikes feature a unique balance of flexibility in the forefoot for the approach run and rigidity through the midfoot for powerful plant mechanics. Most pole vault spikes share similarities with long jump shoes but often include additional ankle support and a slightly higher cut for enhanced stability during the complex vaulting motion.

Throwing Shoes

Throwing footwear for shot, discus, and hammer are completely different from spiked footwear. Throwing shoes feature smooth, flat outsoles designed for optimal rotation in the circle, with strategic pivot points under the ball of the foot. Unlike spiked shoes, throwing footwear uses durable rubber compounds that provide controlled slide and rotation while maintaining enough grip for explosive releases.

For javelin throwers, the requirements differ completely. Javelin spikes resemble high jump shoes with pins in both the heel and forefoot, providing maximum traction during the crossover steps and plant phase. The asymmetrical spike configuration helps athletes maintain balance through their delivery while generating maximum force transfer from the runway to the implement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular sprint spikes for long jump?

Yes, but only at the beginner level. Long jump spikes add support, cushioning, and straps that sprint spikes don’t have. They help protect your body and improve takeoff stability.

What makes high jump spikes different from other field event shoes?

High jump spikes uniquely feature pins in both the forefoot and heel , providing traction during the curved approach and preventing slippage at takeoff. They also have specialized plates that balance stiffness for jumping with flexibility for the approach run.

Should I get separate shoes for triple jump and long jump?

You can get away with one pair, but triple jump shoes add more heel cushioning for repeated impacts. If triple jump is your main event, go with dedicated spikes.

How do throwing shoes differ from regular athletic shoes?

Throwing shoes have completely smooth, flat rubber outsoles designed for rotation in the circle, with no spikes or treads. They feature reinforced uppers, strategic pivot points, and specific rubber compounds that allow controlled sliding while maintaining stability during the throw.

Can I use the same shoes for shot put and discus?

Absolutely. Most rotational throwing shoes are designed for both. Only javelin needs its own spiked footwear.

How long do field event spikes typically last?

With proper care, quality field event spikes last 1-2 seasons of regular training and competition. High jump and throwing shoes often last longer than jumping spikes due to less runway impact.

What's the proper fit for field spikes?

Field event spikes should fit snugly, with minimal movement inside the shoe. High jump and pole vault spikes may fit slightly less aggressively than long jump spikes.

Are carbon fiber plates worth it for field events?

For serious jumpers, yes  carbon adds stiffness and energy return that can add distance or height. But beginners are better off mastering technique first, then upgrading.
