Best Spikes for 100m-400m
At TrackSpikes.co we’ve been helping sprinters choose the right sprint spikes for many seasons. When you're blazing through the 100m dash or taking on that brutal 400m curve, having proper spikes can literally shave seconds off your time. The materials used nowadays such as carbon fiber and Pebax are incredible at transferring power straight into the track.
What Makes Sprint Spikes Different
These shoes are built completely different than what most people think. Sprint spikes focus on one thing getting every bit of your power into the ground as fast as possible.
Distance track spikes are all about comfort since you'll be wearing them longer. But sprint spikes? They don't care about your comfort. Rigid plates, almost no heel cushioning, and they keep you right up on your toes the whole race.
For 100m and 200m events, I always recommend the stiffest spikes we have. Six to eight pins spread across the front part gives you raw power and grip that's unmatched.
400m runners need something slightly different though. They often need a tiny bit of midsole foam that helps without affecting your speed.
Carbon Plates For Sprinting Spikes
Remember when carbon plates were just for marathon shoes? Well, they've completely taken over sprint spikes too now. Our Hyper Carbon CP2 models use full length carbon plates that give you this amazing energy return with every single step. It's like having a spring under your foot that launches you forward.
This technology really shines during acceleration out of the blocks. I've watched runners who struggled with starts suddenly look completely different after switching to carbon plates.
The benefits are pretty obvious when you think about it. That rigid platform means zero energy gets wasted when your foot hits the track. Plus most of these spikes weigh under 5 ounces, so your legs can turn over way faster.
Athletes who make the switch to carbon fiber spikes almost always tell me they feel more explosive off the line. And they maintain higher speeds all the way through the finish.
Choosing Spikes for Your Event
Not every pair of spikes works for every event, that's something I learned early on.
Pure speed guys who focus on 60m and 100m need the most aggressive spikes possible. The Hyper CP5 are perfect for this. Ultra rigid carbon plates and zero drop design that keeps you in optimal sprinting position.
200m and 400m runners have to deal with curves at crazy high speeds. Look for spikes with slight asymmetrical designs that help with cornering. Our Pink Flight Spikes have these subtle elements that really enhance stability through turns.
Multi-event athletes should consider versatile options that perform well across various sprinting distances. Having the right track spikes bag allows you to carry multiple pairs and switch based on your event schedule, ensuring optimal performance whether you're running individual sprints or relay legs. Caring for Your Spikes
A good pair can last you an entire season if you treat them right.
Always use spike covers when walking off the track. Asphalt and concrete will destroy those pins super fast, I've seen too many sprinters learn this the hard way.
Keep spare pins handy and replace them when they get bent or worn down. It's way cheaper than buying new spikes.
Don't over wear them in training either. Save your "race spikes" for competition and key workouts only.
Some sprinters even slip in aftermarket carbon insoles, like the Carbon X, to boost responsiveness. Though that really comes down to personal feelings.
Sprint Spikes FAQs
What's the difference between sprint spikes and regular running shoes?
Sprint spikes are rigid, super lightweight, and use metal pins for traction. Running shoes are cushioned and heavier since they're designed for training, not racing.
How tight should sprint track spikes fit?
They should fit snugly like a second skin with no sliding or movement inside. Most sprinters size down half a size for a secure fit, more information on choosing the right size.
Can I use sprint spikes for hurdles?
Yes, sprint spikes work excellently for hurdle events from 60m to 400m hurdles. The same explosive power and traction needed for sprinting translates perfectly to hurdling. Many elite hurdlers use the exact same spikes for both flat sprints and hurdle races.
How long do sprint track spikes typically last?
Quality spikes can last an entire season of regular training and competition, usually 3 to 6 months. Athletes who train daily might need replacements sooner though. Replace them when the upper shows significant wear, the spike plate loses it's rigidity, or the pins won't stay tight anymore.
Should I wear socks with sprint spikes?
This is totally personal preference, but most sprinters wear thin, lightweight socks or no socks at all. Going sockless gives you the most direct ground feel and eliminates any sliding within the shoe. If you do wear socks, choose moisture wicking materials designed specifically for track competition.
What spike length should I use for sprinting?
Most tracks require 1/4 inch (6mm) pyramid spikes. Some facilities allow 3/8 inch spikes for wet conditions. Always confirm with meet regulations, as using incorrect spike lengths can result in disqualification.
Can I use sprint spikes on concrete or asphalt?
No way! Concrete and asphalt will damage the pins and can increase injury risk. Only use them on proper track surfaces.
How do I break in new sprint track spikes?
Start with easy strides and gradually increase intensity over 3 to 4 sessions. Then I like to Begin with 50-60% effort runs focusing on form, then progress to faster repetitions. Avoid maximum effort sprints until you have had 2-3 sessions in your new spikes.
Are carbon plate spikes worth the investment?
Carbon plate sprint spikes offer measurable performance benefits through superior energy return and reduced weight. Recreational runners or beginners may not notice dramatic differences but will still benefit from the improved efficiency, the real improvement can be seen with higher level athletes.
What's the best warm-up before using spikes?
Complete your full dynamic warm up in training flats. Only switch to sprint spikes for your final preparations - typically 2-3 practice starts and one near race pace effort.
